Cool breezes stirred the surface of the river, making ripples float across its surface. The rushes and mallow grew in small patches, diminished by the cooling climate of leaf-fall. Thornstar paced along the banks, occasionally stopping to sniff at the water, searching for fish or the more uncommon river snails. Her mind was clear and filled with not a care in the world. Times such as these made the hardships of being a leader worthwhile. The clan affairs were running smoothly, and the river was still filled with fish, enough to feed her clan until leaf-bare. Lifting her head, she glanced up the river. A bird flitted past, wheeling through the sky with a jubilant call.
Thornstar sat, focusing her eyes on the river. A dark shadow went by, too deep for her to reach. Ignoring it, she continued to sit, stony and still until a paler contour appeared. Raising a paw, Thornstar struck out with force, feeling her claws sink into the prey. Without hesitation, she pulled her paw upwards, and pressed the kill to the grass. Purring triumphantly, she lay down and reached out to nibble her food when a scent drifted lazily towards her on the breeze. Her eyes flashed, searching unhurriedly for the source.
